Chainsaw Wood Carving

Many artists are starting to explore the art of wood carving with a chainsaw. This art form is an extension of their skills and often uses a mix of traditional and modern carving techniques. Crager, along with Tracie Dugas his wife, have been carving beautiful wood creations together since the 1960s. In between shows, they try to get home as much as possible to help out with painting and staining. His daughters also help with some of his staining and painting projects. They prefer white pine because it is lighter than other types of pine and is less likely to crack.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson, a chainsaw wood carver from Reedsport in Oregon, is Rich Anderson. Anderson is a Poughkeepsie native and lives with his son and wife. Anderson is a graduate in fine arts with several degrees. He also teaches art to pre-K to fifth graders. Anderson has carved sculptures all over Long Island. He also has sculptures from Colorado. His sculptures range from tall trees to small pieces such as corn ear sculptures. He is currently completing a sign design for Youngs Farm Riverhead.

He is able to create exquisite sculptures using a $400 chainsaw, which would normally take several days to chisel a tree. The chainsaw wood carving process is more sustainable than hammers or chisels because it can be recycled. Anderson advertises his business through word of mouth and has carved a giant cobra and a great blue heron for a mechanic in Wading River.

Tracie Dugas

The life-size wizard carved from wood by Tracie Dugas is an impressive example of her skill as a chainsaw wood carver. The 49-year-old woman lives in Clare (Nova Scotia), between Digby and Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was just one of many artists who displayed their work at the Canada Day weekend in Sydney. The Sydney waterfront was flooded with tourists, but the brief dry spell provided a perfect opportunity for locals to enjoy the waterfront and catch a glimpse of the chainsaw artist.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager, while he didn't consider him an artist and wasn't very skilled with a saw chainsaw, turned his passion into a full time career in carving six years back. Crager has been traveling the Eastern U.S. selling over $1 million worth carvings since that time. Crager was raised in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. His father was a chainsaw wood carver. The artist's style fascinated him so he called his boss one day and gave his two week notice.

Crager prefers white Pine because it's easy to find from tree trimming firms. Many people prefer different types of wood. Crager will follow the grain of the wood to create his pieces. While Crager usually knows exactly what he's going to make before he begins a project, he will often change his mind mid-project. While small projects can be completed in a matter of minutes, large carvings can take up to 33 to 35 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins, a chainsaw wood carver, is his name. His wood carvings feature intricate details and many animals. His creations are a hit with tourists and locals alike. Blue Arrow Farm's coffee shop and entrance are graced with the chainsaw sculptures. Blue Arrow Farm is run by Don Oriolo. He is also the owner and manager of Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo’s husband, met while participating in a New Jersey State Fair competition for chainsaws.

The award-winning wood carver began carving at a competition in Reedsport, Oregon, 15 years ago. He had already carved by hand, but he had never used a chainsaw before. FAQ

Where can I start woodworking?

It is best to actually build furniture to learn how to make it. You'll need tools, and you'll have to make mistakes along the way, but if you keep at it, you'll eventually figure out what you're doing.

You should first choose the project you wish to complete. It can be something as simple and small as a box, or large-scale as an entertainment center. After you have decided on a project to work on, contact a local woodworker that specializes in this type of work. Ask them for suggestions on the tools you will need and where to buy them. Perhaps you could ask if there is someone else who does this type of work.

What kind wood should I use for my project?

The most popular types of wood used in woodworking include oak, pine, birch, maple, cherry, mahogany, teak, poplar, redwood, and bamboo. Every type of wood is different and can have a unique look and feel that will affect the final product. Oak, for example, tends be darker and more hard than other woods. Birch is light and soft, while mahogany can be heavier and more dense. You can also choose between solid wood and veneers. Veneers are thin wood sheets that are glued together to form one layer.

How can I keep my shop organized?

Setting aside an area to store tools is the first step in keeping your workshop organized. To keep your tools sharp and ready for work, keep them clean of dust and debris. Use pegboard hooks to hang tools and accessories.

What kind of tools are used to carpenters?

The most common tool used by carpenters is a hammer. The hammer is used to pound nails into wood. They can also use it to hold the pieces together as they work on a project. Other tools include clamps.

What is the minimum amount I will need to start?

Since every project differs, it is impossible to give exact numbers. These are the factors that will give you an idea of how much you'll need.

  • Cost of materials
  • Tools and equipment
  • Time spent on the Project
  • Hourly rate
  • What amount of profit can you expect to make?
  • Whether you plan to hire help

You might start small if you are just starting out. You will gain more experience and be able to tackle larger projects.

How does a beginner woodworker earn money?

Many people want to open an online furniture business and are learning how to build it. But if you're just getting started building furniture, there are other ways to earn money besides selling on Etsy. You could sell at craft fairs or local events. A workshop could also be offered for people who are interested to learn how they can build their own furniture. You might be able to offer services like remodeling homes or making custom pieces for clients if you are a skilled carpenter.

How To

Tips on how to drive a nail in wood

To drive a nail into wood, the first step is to select the right size and type hammer. The most popular types of hammers include claw hammers as well as mallets and ball peenhammers. Each type of hammer comes with its advantages and disadvantages. A claw hammer works well when you're trying to hit nails with a heavy hammer. However it is difficult to precisely control where the blow hits. Although a sledgehammer can be used to hit large areas quickly, it is too heavy to be useful for small tasks.

After selecting the right hammer, you will need to place your hand flat against one side of the head. The handle should rest comfortably in your hands. You can grip the handle with your fingers, but not so tight that it causes injury. Your wrist should be relaxed while you hold the hammer straight upwards. Next, swing the hammer toward the ground and aim for the nail's center. You should feel the impact from the hammer striking a nail. Try practicing with a block to help you master the art of swinging a stick.

The hammer should be held close to your body when you are ready to begin driving the nail. To ensure that the nail is perpendicular on the surface of the wooden floor, position it. Keep your attention on the tip. Swing the hammer forward, and then move the hammerhead. This can be repeated several times to increase the speed of your swing. After mastering the technique, you can add power to your swings. Try holding the hammer above your shoulder and bring it down forcefully. This way, you'll be able to put more energy behind your blows.

Once you have made the first hole, remove your hammer. To remove the remainder of the nails, you can use a screwdriver/pry bar. To prevent splitting the wood, ensure you keep the nail heads flush against the board's surface.
